Alpinist in Afghanistan
From the Kabul airport I hitchhike to the American Embassy and make my way to the headquarters of the Coalition Forces command, where a sergeant places three phone calls to determine I'm on the roster with the Marines. Credentials in hand, I take a taxi to Bagram Air Force Base. A few helicopter rides later and a trip up IED ("improvised explosive device") Alley in a thunderstorm in the back of a Humvee with a flat tire, I arrive at the farthest out, most dangerous fire base in the country: Camp Blessing, in the eastern Kunar Province, in the foothills of the Hindu Kush.
