Credentials in hand, I take a taxi to Bagram Air Force Base. A few helicopter rides later and a trip up IED ("improvised explosive device") Alley in a thunderstorm in the back of a Humvee with a flat tire, I arrive at the farthest out, most dangerous fire base in the country: Camp Blessing, in the eastern Kunar Province, in the foothills of the Hindu Kush.

This ¨heart of the island¨ was where the Shelk’nam natives found refuge during the winter, living in the forests and seeking food and clothing from herds of ¨guanacos¨ which still today inhabit in the area.
